Dogs require a quality protein source
Feeding your pet is big business. Not all pet-food companies put your pet's health and welfare above profits. It's become common knowledge that federal guidelines require that manufacturers list their ingredients by order of weight.

What few realize is that many manufacturers list their protein source in its "wet," raw state, where as much as 76 percent of the weight is just water, pushing that ingredient to the top of the list.

When the protein is processed into the "meal" state in order to be put into the dog food, it becomes, on average, five times lighter (1/5 its pre-processed weight), and should, in all reality, be listed as the fourth of fifth ingredient.

Grains are not only beneficial as a source of energy, they also contain many other important nutritional benefits.

Oatmeal -- Prevents congestion and formation of toxins. Rich in phosphorus and high in lysine, an essential amino acid that aids in calcium absorption necessary for proper bone development and strength. Lysine is also instrumental in the formation of collagen, which is the basic matrix of connective tissues, skin, cartilage and bone. Oats are also a rich source of vitamins B1, B2, D and E, as well as carotene and health-enhancing minerals. They are proven to lower blood pressure and reduce high cholesterol in the blood.

Millet -- Known for increasing longevity, contains high amounts of the B compound vitamins. It also contains phytate, which is associated with reduced cancer risk. It is a "soothing," non-allergenic and easily digestible grain.

Ethoxyquin -- A manufactured chemical animal-feed preservative that is also used in making rubber. It is listed as a pesticide by the Department of Agriculture and has been banned fro use in human food.

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) -- OSHA lists BHA and BHT as chemical hazards in the laboratory and have ben linked to various forms of cancer, most commonly kidney, liver and bladder cancers.

Propylene glycol -- This compound inhibits unwanted bacteria growth in dog-food packaging. It is a poisonous ingredient used to formulate antifreeze.

Potassium sorbate -- A commonly used preservative that is chemically similar to fat.

Sucrose -- Common table sugar.

Propyl gallate -- Used to retard spoilage, and is suspected of causing lover damage.
